The Battle of the Atlantic began on September 3, 1939, with the sinking of the Montréal-bound passenger ship SS Athenia by a German submarine west of Ireland the battle ended 6years later on May 1945. It was the longest battle of World War II.
Battle of the Atlantic played an important role in World War II, For Britain it was necessary to win the battle because the Atlantic was a door way for North America to connect to Europe and give supplies to the men fighting in Europe. The Germans so this connection and wanted to control the Atlantic and cut off the food supplies that were going to Europe. German Submarine boats which were called U-boats that contained torpedoes and also laid mines to destroy merchant ships that were carrying food and equipment supplies. The Germans also made effective hunting techniques one called the “wolf pack.”
With the U-boats near Canada’s East Coast it meant war for Canada. The Royal Canadian Air Force. The Royal Canadian Navy and the Canada’s Merchant Navy began joining forced with the allies which would play a key role. Canada’s east coast like Newfoundland, St. Johns and Halifax became major ports in sending off Allied convoys. Not only that, but the Royal Canadian Navy operating across the globe to help the British army.
Technology played a major role in the battle without the advancing help of technology we might not have been able to overcome the strategic strategies of the Germans. The allies built a device called the “hedgehog” bombs which was a more effect way of sinking the U-boats. Airplanes help protect merchant ships to get across the Atlantic.
The Battle helped Canada’s navy grow and also Canada’s industry grew with it. If the allies had not won the battle in Atlantic the outcome of the war could have changed dramatically. If Germans had controlled the Atlantic then the allies would not be able to move ships and would be impossible to bring solders ashore on D-Day.
